How-to Buy Your Next Exmark Mower

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Here’s a post for the Exmark newbies.  As you prepare to purchase your next mower in 2011, we want you to be informed and prepared. So we’ve put together a short guide to help you pick out the right Exmark mower for the job. You’ll want to meet with your local Exmark dealer as well, but this will at least get you headed in the right direction.

Budget

The first thing you want to keep in mind, when purchasing your new Exmark, is your budget. You need the most dependable and durable mower that you can afford. Exmark has many mowers to suit any budget or mowing needs. Interested in learning how you can finance your next Exmark retail mower? David Adams, Exmark Financial Services Manager, explains the process in our latest YouTube video.

Mowing properties

The next thing you’ll want to consider, is what kind of properties you’ll be mowing. Smaller residential lawns require smaller mowers like the new 36″ Vantage or Commercial 21, but for larger commercial properties you’ll want to go with a zero-turn mower like the Lazer Z.

For properties under a 1/2 acre we’d recommend:

  • Vantage
  • Commercial 21
  • Metro
  • Viking
  • Turf Tracer

For properties above a 1/2 acre, we’d recommend:

  • Quest
  • Pioneer
  • Navigator
  • Lazer Z

Mower Engine and Features

After you’ve considered your budget, lawn size and terrain, you’ll want to look at your next Exmark mower for the engine and features offered. All Exmark models come with a variety of engine types and configurations (including eco-friendly models) and mower accessories (like mulching and striping kits). Still not sure what you’d like?  You can check out the “Not Sure What to Buy” section of exmark.com or the Compare Mowers section here.

Mower TLC

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

For those of you that haven’t had a chance to check out some of our older posts about maintenance for your Exmark, here’s a refresher. Sure, your Exmark mowers are tough machines, but even the metal beasts need to be shown a certain amount of care to keep giving the results you and your customers are looking for. Here are a few ways to help your equipment get the job done right.

  • Change the gas and oil soon after taking out your mower. Gas that has been sitting in the tank throughout the winter becomes lower in quality and has a tendency to go stale faster, causing damage to your mower.
  • Check the blades before any big job. Seriously. Do it. With a little practice, you can change a set of blades and be mowing in less than five minutes, and the higher quality cut is sure to impress.
  • Give your mower a good cleaning inside and out since grass clippings can often hide out of plain sight. It may require a little more work, but in the end better airflow through the deck will deliver more of the cut quality you’ve come to expect.
  • It’s not exactly manly, but reading the manual is essential for proper care of your equipment. Even if you’re a mower maintenance guru, the difference from one model to the next can be staggering.
  • If something does go wrong, call up an expert. A few well spoken words of wisdom can save a do-it-yourselfer from hours of headache.

See? It doesn’t take that much to keep your mower happy, which, in the end, will keep you happy.

We’d love to hear how you keep your mower in tip-top shape.

Our Motivation Behind the First Lazer Z

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Lazer Z X-SeriesIt’s hard to believe that the Lazer Z has been around for more than 16 years. Back in May 1994, when we first started working on the best-selling mower, we wanted to fill a hole in the marketplace. Mowers of that time were big machines that lacked productivity and reliability. They wasted time on the grass and wasted valuable space on trailers. So we decided that our mower wasn’t going to be just productive and reliable, but it was going to be a machine that would deliver an unmistakable cut. It would also be a machine that minded its space.

But before we rolled up our sleeves and cranked up the factory floor, we put on our comfy shoes and traveled to some of our territories to hear firsthand what pros want in a mower.

With feedback in hand, we headed to Beatrice and started building our vision. More than a year later, the very first Lazer Z rolled off the line. It was the first mid-mount mower to provide a quality cut with every job, and to do it in less time. It was a mower that wasn’t just productive, but extremely reliable. It was the first machine to take up less trailer space, allowing room for the rest of the fleet. It was truly a product that revolutionized the industry; it changed how a landscape pro mowed.

Of course the Lazer Z of today is different from its humble beginnings, but not by much. We transformed and improved on a few of its features, but we kept the productivity, reliability and quality of cut just as impressive as the original model.

It’s been a long, rewarding road. One we would travel on if we had to do it all over again.

Do you remember your first Lazer Z? We’d love to hear from you.

The Exmark Vantage

Vantage

The new Vantage featuring a 36" cutting deck

It’s been more than a year since we introduced the Vantage. During that time, we’ve continued to tweak and make the Vantage one of the most comfortable, reliable and productive stand-on mowers in the industry.

This year, we’ve made a few additions to the mower. The first addition is a new 36″ Vantage with the UltraCut Series 3 cutting deck technology. This new 36″ unit makes getting in and out of gates easier and comes with integrated tie-down points for secure trailering.

We’ve also added a new fuel efficient option to the Vantage product line — a 25 hp Kohler Command Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) Pro V-Twin engine.

Of course both of the new options available will still have the standard great stuff you’ve come to love about the Vantage including;

  • Speeds up to 8 mph forward and 4 mph reverse
  • Self-compensating suspension makes standing more comfortable
  • Adjustable platform for mowing hill sides and fold up ability allowing for walk-behind functionality
  • Heavy duty canister air filtration system

If you have time in the next few months, we encourage you to test out the new 36” Vantage and tell us what you think.

Love the Vantage?  Tested it already? Share your thoughts below.

‘Tis the Season: Part 3

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

This week’s post is from Karen Jurgens, whose true holiday spirit can’t be dampened by a little snow.

Karen Jurgens – Assembler

We always celebrate the holidays with my kids and grandkids coming to our house on Christmas Eve for a sit-down dinner of prime rib with all the fixings. Then we head to the living room where we open presents and catch up. Last year things didn’t go according to plan. If you remember, some major storms, make that blizzards, hit the Midwest. There was one particularly nasty storm right around Christmas that knocked out power lines and closed roads. Well I wasn’t going to let that scrooge ruin our holiday. I put the prime rib in the freezer and moved Christmas to January. Hey, tradition is tradition and no amount of snow in the world was going to ruin it for us. So come January, my kids and grandkids came down and we ate dinner and opened presents. Now that I think about it, this Christmas will be our second in 2010. Not too shabby if you ask me.

No matter how you and your family celebrate, everyone at Exmark wishes you a happy holiday season.

‘Tis the Season: Part 2

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

This week’s post comes from our very own CEO, whose celebration is steeped in tradition

Rick Olsen – General Manager

Our holiday celebration is shaped by two things: my Swedish ancestry and my birthday. My birthday is on December 24th. This is great for me since that’s the day my entire extended family comes together to celebrate Christmas. We kick things off with a little midday lunch that includes cake and birthday presents. After lunch, we usually spend the rest of the day catching up and enjoying each other’s company. Before we know it, it’s time for dinner. We always have a traditional Swedish meal that takes me back to my roots. A family program follows dinner, where the children play musical instruments and the eldest read Christmas stories. Then it’s time to open presents. But no matter how many presents I get on that day, whether for my birthday or Christmas, my absolute favorite present by far is seeing my entire family in one place.

No matter how you and your family celebrate, everyone at Exmark wishes you a happy holiday season.

‘Tis the Season: Part 1

Monday, December 20th, 2010

The lights are up. The mall Santas have taken their rightful thrones. The deal-hunters are out in full force. The lists and cookies have been made. Everywhere you turn, it’s beginning to look a lot like the most wonderful time of the year. To keep in the spirit, we’d like to take a moment and shift focus from mowers to people. Specifically our Exmark people. The next few posts are dedicated to three of our employees and how they like to spend their holiday season.

We’re kicking off the holiday posts with one from Debbie Hartig.

Debbie Hartig – Materials Coordinator

Ever since I can remember, we’ve celebrated Christmas on the 24th. We always get together at a relative’s house, eat a delicious prime rib dinner and open presents. We have the best time just sitting around and catching up. And if the mood strikes, we’ll pop in a few home movies and catch up on Christmases past. And haircuts past! I can’t imagine spending the holidays any other way.

No matter how you and your family celebrate, everyone at Exmark wishes you a happy holiday season.

2011 EFI Units

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

This year was a big one: we introduced a number of new units at GIE+EXPO, including the Pioneer Series and the new Vantage. We also introduced five new energy efficient units for 2011.

Energy efficiency is an important and growing area of focus for the landscaping industry. We believe it is part of our responsibility at Exmark to provide landscape professionals with the option of selecting an energy efficient mower when they make a purchase.

Here’s a look at the new Electronic Fuel Injected (EFI) units for 2011 – all designed to cut fuel and save you money.

The entire fleet of EFI units features a state-of-the-art Kohler PRO EFI engine, which is the industry’s first closed loop fuel injection system. These new engines can allow the units to consume up to 25 percent less fuel than a standard carburetor-powered mower for savings that really add up over time.

What do you think of the new 2011 EFI units? Do you own an EFI unit? Tell us about it in the comments section.
